Westinghouse Electric led team submits application to US DOE

Westinghouse Electric will partner will Burns & McDonnell and General Dynamics Electric Boat to submit an application to the U S Department of Energy (USDOE) to secure funding for its small modular reactor technology.

Westinghouse Electric SMR product manager Michael Anness said the company is pleased to welcome Burns & McDonnell and Electric Boat as members of its vendor team to support the Westinghouse Small Modular Reactor design effort for deployment of a Westinghouse SMR at Ameren Missouri’s Callaway Energy Center.

"We feel that this collaboration is an excellent fit for the team and will tremendously enhance our capabilities to provide licensing, construction and operational certainty that no other U.S. SMR supplier applying for DOE investment funds can match," said Anness.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said Westinghouse’s application has unequivocal support from the state of Missouri, all of the electric-utility providers, labor organizations, and our powerhouse research universities.

"Adding a world-class engineering firm like Burns & McDonnell to the team only makes our application stronger," he added.

Electric Boat will provide modular design support for Westinghouse SMR project while Burns & McDonnell will provide architectural and engineering support.

The Westinghouse SMR, a 225MWe integral pressurized water reactor, will be built based on it’s AP1000 reactor.

DOE’s small modular reactor funding opportunity will award funds to SMR projects that have the potential to be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and achieve commercial operation by 2022.
