BHEL to supply electro-mechanical equipment for 720MW hydro project in Bhutan

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been selected to supply the main electro-mechanical equipment for the 720MW Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan.

The contract is valued at an estimated INR7.5bn ($139m) and is being set up under a bilateral agreement between the governments of India and Bhutan.

The equipment to be supplied by BHEL includes four Pelton turbines and generators of 170MW capacity each, and other associated equipment, manufactured and supplied by BHEL’s Bhopal facility.

Scope of the contract includes manufacture, supply, install and commission the electro-mechanical equipment for the 4x170MW plant.

A control system will be additionally manufactured and supplied by the company’s electronic division at Bangalore.

This project represents BHEL’s third major electro-mechanical package contract for the company in Bhutan following similar agreements for the 1,200MW Punatsangchhu-I and 1,020MW Punatsangchhu-II projects.

The company had also installed the electro-mechanical equipment at the 1020MW Tala, 336MW Chhukha and the 60MW Kurichhu hydroelectric projects in Bhutan.
