REpower completes phase II of 325MW offshore wind project in Belgium

REpower Systems has completed the installation of the wind turbines for the phase II of the 325MW Thornton Bank offshore wind farm located about 28km off the Belgian coast in waters between 12 and 27m for C-Power.

The 325MW offshore Thornton Bank wind farm once completed will be able to provide electricity to about 600,000 people.

Repower installed 30 Repower turbines of type 6M each with a generated capacity of 6.15MW for the Thornton Bank Phase II and the current power generating capacity of the project is 215MW.

The installation partners of the project were ABB and THV Seawind, a consortium between DEME and Fabricom and others.

REpower Systems CEO Andreas Nauen said, "The fact that we were able to complete Phase II successfully and on time is proof of our well-developed logistics concept and the good cooperation between the teams during the installation of the turbines."

REpower Offshore president Frank Zimmermann said, "During the execution phase we paid special attention to ensure that all people involved in the project thought and acted in a safety-conscious manner in accordance with our charter."

The company will construct and install the third phase of the Thornton Bank with 18 REpower 6M turbines next year.

The company’s scope of work for all the three construction phases includes producing and supplying nacelles, towers, blades, and hubs.

The contract also covers pre-installation in the port of Oostende, the offshore installation and the commissioning and the test run of the turbines.

Repower will also deliver its full service product OFS for all three phases, which includes responsibility for transportation at sea.

C-Power is consortium formed by four Belgian investors and has RWE Innogy and EDF EN as its shareholders.

German based REpower Systems is a Suzlon group company that manufactures onshore and offshore wind turbines.
