Westinghouse to study feasibility of seventh unit at Kozloduy nuclear plant

Kozloduy NPP – New Build has selected Westinghouse Electric Company for a contract to carry out a feasibility study at the
Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant located 200km north of Sofia, Bulgaria, and evaluate the potential for a seventh unit.

The companies together will review two potential designs which include a reactor of VVER design utilising equipment already purchased by the customer together with Westinghouse instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, fuel and a Toshiba Corporation turbine generator, and the construction and operation of a pressurized water reactor 1000-1200MW design.

Westinghouse Europe, Middle East and Africa president Yves Brachet said the company will assess the potential to bring its I&C and fuel products for VVER reactor designs at the site.

"Our 20 years experience with the operating units at Kozloduy and our continued presence on site to provide world-class assistance places us in a unique position to provide the customer with a solution to complete a VVER-designed plant," Brachet said.

The companies will also study and evaluate the site, radioactive waste and spent fuel management, reuse of existing infrastructures and facilities, licensing, local economic aspects, and the profitability of the two reactor designs.

The safety and operational record of the nuclear plant provides a strong base to host an additional reactor at the site.

Westinghouse Electric Company, a group company of Toshiba, is a supplier of nuclear plant products and technologies to utilities.
