Siemens wins contract for 270MW K2 wind project in Canada

Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract to supply turbines for the 270MW K2 wind project in Canada.

Featuring 140 units of the Siemens SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines, the 270-MW K2 Wind Ontario (K2 Wind) project can produce clean power for 100,000 Ontario homes and is expected to begin commercial operation in mid-2015.

Owned by Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy Group, the project is located in Goderich in southwestern Ontario.

Announced by Siemens at the AWEA trade show in Las Vegas, the contract also includes a long-term service and maintenance agreement aimed to ensure the reliability, availability and performance of the turbines.

Blades will be developed at the Siemens facility in Tillsonburg, Ontario while towers for the project will be manufactured locally in Canada.

The nacelles will be assembled at Siemens’ US manufacturing plant in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Pattern Development chief executive officer Mike Garland said the K2 Wind will be an important addition to renewable energy fleet for Ontario with 270 MW of clean power generation being built in one of Ontario’s key wind areas.

"Along with Samsung and Capital Power, we are proud to develop a world-class wind project that is particularly exciting because we are hiring locally and using turbine blades and towers made in Ontario," Garland added.
